Dating Fun with Four Conversation Secrets

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Austin Barnes Do you want a date filled with awkward silence or an evening full of conversation fun? Your conversation abilities will make the difference. Four conversation secrets will put you on the path to dating fun. Secret #1: Take 3 Minutes to prepare. Three minutes will unlock your ability to have a great date. Take a moment and mentally come up with four or five conversation topics and four or five conversation questions. Your topics and questions can include: -Personal experiences -Family -Joke -Recent events -Hobbies -News items -Etc. Whenever a silent pause creeps up, you zap it. Either ask a question or share one of your topics. This brings up more discussion and more fun. All it takes is three minutes to prepare. Secret #2: Find connections or things in common. A fun conversation happens when both parties are talking on a subject they are both interested in. Look for things you both have in common or enjoy talking about. At first you may not know what you both enjoy talking about. Quickly find this out with three steps: 1.Ask questions. 2.Listen for a connection. The other person may mention they enjoy movies. If you also enjoy movies, take a mental note. 3.Bring out the connection. Ask questions about the connection. Mention that you are also interested in that area. Friendships are based on connections or things you have in common. As you discover connections, your friendship will deepen and the fun will intensify. Secret #3: Show interest by asking questions and listening. Do you want to impress the other person? Do you want to leave a great impression? Do you want to quickly make friends? There is a simple way. Ask questions and listen. By focusing your spotlight of interest on the other person, they will talk, enjoy the date, and so will you. A great practice is to count to five after the other person finishes talking. Often they will say more. You will leave a great impression and it will help keep you relaxed. Secret #4: Relax, enjoy, have fun. Relax-this is the key to a good date. Don’t feel like you have to force conversations. Just have fun. Laugh at yourself. Show emotion. This will help break the ice. Many dates will have some awkward moments. Just accept it and keep applying the four secrets. Instead of focusing on leaving a great impression, focus on applying the four secrets. You will then leave a great impression and have an awesome fun filled date! How To Screen Online Profile Pictures

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Scot McKay This is an acquired skill. It isn’t learned overnight. But if you are doing the online dating thing want to avoid some serious drama, you’llumneed mad skeelz. And you know what I’m talking about. You sort through people online, say at Match.com or Yahoo Personals. Some look interesting, butthe deal with the pictures is, you know, sketchy. Here’s the crash course on screening online profile pics. It’s not an exact science, but there are some short-cuts and tell-tale signs that are virtually infallible. You may not agree, and your mileage may vary, so send me your feedback. Also send me your ideas that you would have included. Okay, first of allyou are NOT “shallow” if you want to see what the person looks like. Get that weight off your shoulders. If anyone ever says this to you again, feel free to tell him or her McKay is to blame for your attitude. I can live with that. This is a key component of attraction, whether people potentially unattractive to you like it or not! Don’t be played into thinking you are unreasonable by someone with no picture for asking. And don’t be duped into meeting the person either. Of note also here are those with no picture (or even one substandard one) who claim, “I am incredibly hott, but have no/bad pictures because I: 1) Don’t have a digital camera, and have no friends with one either, 2) am computer illiterate, despite my ability to complete this profile, and 3) fear being seen by coworkers/friends and embarrassed.” Don’t buy it. Any of it. If there’s something bothering this person about being seen by others, and you are REALLY intrigued, then maybe ask for the pics to be emailed to you. This has actually panned out for me exactly one time in three years. If you get more excuses at that point, you’ve gotta jettperiod. Bear in mind that people with no pics may not just be insecure about their appearance. Some may be MARRIED. Or WANTED in six states! Think about that one for a while. People with one picture that’s either fuzzy or very limited in view aren’t off the hook here, either. Ask for more pictures-it’s okay. “I have a picture up there already, and that’s what I look like” doesn’t cut it as an excuse. Here are a few more silver bullets on this subject. Glamour Shot=Run Away. Seriously. If he or she has webcam capture pics only, same story (although requesting that he or she get on the cam for you isn’t a bad idea). Also, look out for the pic that’s a very close-cropped face shotthat’s not enough to go on. And keep your eyes open for clear signs that the pics are not exactly new or accurate. One of my personal favorites was the woman who talked about having a 12-year-old son in her profile, and the pic was of her holding an infant! When I called her on it, she said, “Yeah, it’s okay. I still look exactly like that.” Hmmm. I have also seen people in their mid to late twenties who have posted pictures from high school, it turns out. That’s just wrong on many levels, if you think about it. I mean, how creeped out is a brother supposed to feel for finding pics of a 27 y.o. woman attractive-who’s actually 16? You get my drift. The other thing–and you’ve seen this for sure–is the person with 20 pictures upALL of which look completely different! I’ve seen women with pictures so diverse that you’d swear an entire sorority was sharing one profile. Hair color, various stages of weight gain/loss, age differences, etc. Interestingly, I have found that there is virtually no indication as to which of the pics someone is going to really look like, with two exceptions: 1) The bigger the body, the greater the likelihood of current accuracy, and 2) The ones with the tattoos are probably newer. That said, I’ve met women who look like NONE of their umpteen pictures, which perhaps serves as a reasonable indictment of the entire purpose of the pics to begin with, right? Also a potential question mark is the person who teases you with the promise of “12 pics”, all but one of which are dogs, sunsets, BMWs, Paris, etc. What is that about? Is the subject of the profile not “enough” to impress me? If notwellyou get it. Look also for subtle (or not so much) clues about someone’s true personality in the pics. You know this guy. He’s the one who’s such a “loyal, family-man” type in the profile, and posts the picture where you can see what’s going on at the “gentlemen’s club” in the background. Listing examples here could go on all day. So what are some indicators that the pics are good and accurate? Well, firstconsistency. Several pics that are clearly of the same person is a plus, assuming they all aren’t from the same photo session or something. In this case, you can usually be sure that s/he might look like that when and if you meet. Be careful here, because some people are either very photogenic or not. Feel free to ask that question, and listen closely to the answer-which might be surprisingly candid. Actually if someone says, “I take TERRIBLE pics!” that tends to be a good sign. If you think about it, that makes sense if you are already liking what you see. Next, variety. A face shot, a full-body shot, indoor, outdoors, casual, formal, silly, serious, smiling, serious, etc. If people have nothing to hide here, they shouldn’t and typically won’t. I’m not talking about bikini shots being necessary here though, and the general consensus among women I’ve noticed is that they’d rather guys keep their clothes on in profile pics. So you know what I mean. Interestingly, disclaimers in the text of a profile about the pics are usually accuratebe they good or bad. I’m not quite on board with the woman who had five or six pictures, only to say on the last line of her tome-like profile that she had “gained fifty pounds since the pics were taken” (refer to “games”). Nonetheless, if someone says something to the effect of , “YesI’m 42 and the pictures are recent”, you are likely dealing with someone who truly is looking good for his or her age. So there are a few ideas to get you started. I good by-product of this discussion might be to re-evaluate one’s own pics, right? A Guide to Criminal Lawyers

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Kristy Annely A criminal lawyer is someone who specializes in handling criminal cases with implications such as arson, DUI, murder, theft, etc. The primary role of a criminal lawyer is to review evidences and to map-out an effective defense strategy. Criminal lawyers either work as defense lawyers or prosecutors. A criminal defense lawyer will represent the accused, advice the client on legal matters, and assist in the framing of legal documents such as contracts, wills, etc. They can also act as public defenders in cases of indigence. A criminal defense lawyer with substantial expertise in the field will have the ability to interrogate the prosecution witnesses to prove the client?s innocence. In extreme situations, a professional lawyer may negotiate with the prosecution lawyer to mete out charges and punishments in an equitable manner. A prosecutor works on behalf of the government in criminal proceedings. Whether it is defense or prosecution, criminal lawyers can utilize government statistics and other official documents at any phase of the case. The laws governing criminal lawyers vary from state to state, but a basic code law is observed all over the United States. The criminal lawyer?s office will take up the responsibility of meeting the clients, arranging court dates, carrying out background researches of cases, etc. In order to practice as a licensed attorney, one should pass the bar exam after completion of a three-year course in a law school. In addition to educational requirements, a criminal lawyer must possess certain qualities such as good communication and listening skills, organizing capabilities, public speaking skills, ability to handle complex criminal cases, and to deal with people from all backgrounds. Since criminal cases would involve a lot of paper work for trials and criminal proceedings and so criminal lawyers should also possess writing skills. Additionally, they ought to be excellent negotiators. The salary of a criminal lawyer will depend upon the jurisdiction and the nature of the case. Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Magnets

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Marcus Peterson Magnets are objects made from materials that are capable of stimulating magnetic reactions. Such reactions are created with the presence of a magnetic field. Examples of these materials are copper, iron, and steel. The atoms of magnetic materials are arranged in units called domains. A domain is actually a set of numerous atoms that act like a small magnet. If the domains are placed against a strong magnetic field, they are made to move the way the magnetic field does. These domains tend to pull each other together, aligning themselves to become a strong magnet. The concept of magnetism was first explored by a scientist named William Gilbert. He was the first one to realize that the planet earth is indeed a large magnet. He was also able to discover that magnets can be formed by using twisted iron. After him, a scientist named Hans Christian proved that there is indeed a relationship between electricity and magnetism. There are basically three types of magnets: temporary magnets, permanent magnets, and electromagnets. Temporary magnets are those materials that elicit magnetic reactions when placed in even weak magnetic fields. However, these materials lose such reactions once the magnetic field is removed. Examples of these materials are Permalloy and soft iron. Permanent magnets, on the other hand, are those that exhibit magnetic properties even without the presence of magnetic fields. Examples are ferrites and alnico. Meanwhile, electromagnets are built when large magnets are required to perform certain tasks. These magnets are made by placing a metal core inside a coil of wire that carries an electric current. Today, magnets are used in several kinds of equipment, such as electric motors and generators. Temporary magnets, meanwhile, are used in telephones and televisions. Electromagnets are used in large vehicles like the Maglev train. This type of train operates without wheels. It moves by using a magnetic reaction between the track and the lower portion of the train. Magnets provides detailed information on Magnets, Mosquito Magnets, Car Magnets, Refrigerator Magnets and more. Magnets is affiliated with Custom Printed Lanyards. Buddhism: Free Membership?

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Sharon White In this paper I shall compare Buddhism to Islam and Christianity, and try to uncover similarities and distinctions between them. Also Ill explain whether Buddhism is a religion or a philosophy, and observe the requirements for membership eligibility. What is religion? Longmans dictionary says that Religion is the organised worship of God. Websters dictionary says Religion is the belief of the existence of God. Both dictionaries have one thing in common, they both relate to God in one way or another. How is Buddhism a religion? Buddhism has many similar features, which are common in other major religions such as Christianity and Islam. I would like to identify that Buddhism has a Founder; it has sacred scriptures, sacred time, sacred objects, and sacred place. The Founder of Buddhism was Siddhartha Guatama lived about 2600 years ago; he was the son of a wealthy Indian King and had all the luxuries that anyone would have ever wanted. But, he became unhappy about the purpose of his life and knew that there was more to life, then lavishness. He knew that this wouldnt bring true happiness and that they wouldnt prevent him from growing old and then finally dying. So he left the palace in search of an answer. He is now known to be one of the greatest teachers ever known and now has 327 million people, who followed his path and become Buddhists. Buddhism has sacred scriptures just like other religions such as Muslims who have the Quran and Christians who have the Bible. Some years ago after the Buddha died, his disciples, who are also known as the Sangha, the congregation of monks, met to write down his famous sayings. They wrote them in the Pali language and many Buddhists read this, so they are able to look upon Siddhartha as an example. If you were to look at Buddhism through these two dictionaries points of view, then Buddhism would not be a religion, for it does not believe the subsistence of God. So how is Buddhism not a religion? Buddhists do not believe is God, so therefore they have no-one to worship or pray to. On the other hand Buddhism has all the other elements of it being a religion. All religions have a Founder like Islam who has Allah. He shared the idea of Islam with people and the believers are now known as Muslims. The Founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha who shared his ideas of living life between two extremes and choosing the middle way so that you can overcome suffering. It has festivals and holy days just like other religions where they celebrate special days where of when the Buddha found Buddhism. Many Buddhists have organised themselves into Orders or groups. They meet together to meditate in specially designed buildings and temples. This is very similar to Islam, because Muslims join together to pray Namaz at a mosques. This makes people feel belonged to a certain group and gives them support at their difficult times. These are all good examples of how Buddhism can be a religion but there are other elements which Buddhism doesnt fulfil to be a religion. In every other religion God plays a major part of it, but in Buddhism there is no-one to look up to or worship. I think it is important for God to exist because people are able to form relationships with him and are able to put faith in him. This means people are able to look to him so that they are able to get through any hard times that life may put them through. Religions have rules and restrictions for their followers to live by so that they can gain the pleasure of their God and please him. If they are not obeyed then they are sinning in the eyes of God. Buddhists have guidelines that they can live by, if they choose to. They are given to them so that they are able to overcome the sufferings and pains of the world so its for the best of them. They believe that they do not need to be in groups to meditate, they can do it alone. They think that Buddhists should find their own separate way out and being in groups may prevent this as people would do what others would. Siddhartha warned against giving yourself a label. This goes against his teachings about there is no self. You can not give a label to something that does not exist. This means that Buddhists can not call themselves Buddhists because there is the danger of them becoming attached to the group. Some people like to start of by joining a group so its easier for them to get into the idea of Buddhism and receive support from others. But as they used to the ideas, they then go there own way. This is like learning how to ride a bike. First of all you can use stabilisers to help you but when you have learnt how to ride it and are able to balance and understand it, you can take the stabilisers off and go at it alone. I think that Buddhism isnt a religion because I think its important for a God to be involved in it and because it doesnt have one, there is no-one to turn or look upon. The Cottage Garden

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Robin De Groot Cottages are a retreat for our soul. Places where we can both unwind and regenerate our families and ourselves. Generally our cottages are nestled in areas of raw bush and craggy rock. The mistake many people make with their cottage garden is to ignore their rugged landscape and attempt to create a structured or city style garden. The best cottage gardens are those that take advantage of and enhance the stark beauty of the wild. As the saying goes, you cant improve on Mother Nature. Rather than affecting a design, plant a mixture of indigenous and hardy shrubs, perennials and wild flowers that will thrive in your local. Not only will this save you needless heartache and hours of maintenance, it will save you money from continually replacing your ill-suited plants. Begin by selecting a variety of shrubs that will give your garden a sense of structure, such as Blue Rug Junipers, Cotoneaster horizontalis and for those especially difficult areas, Juniper Sabina. The Sabina will actually thrive in extremely rocky, poor soil areas; just remember to plant in full sun locations only. Perennial Geraniums, also known as cranesbills, are the perfect cottage perennial. The cransebill is a hardy, adaptable perennial that is disease and pest resistant. Whether your garden is a full sun or predominantly shady location, there are a variety of cranesbills all in a marvelous array of colours (white, mauve, purple, magenta, blue, and pink). For complete shade locations try G. macrorhizum, a strong spreader with delicate mauve blossoms. In semi-shade areas try G. maculatum, particularly in a rock garden location. In full sun gardens try G. cinerum (ballerina). All of these species are drought tolerant, aromatic and will spread evenly in your garden but not invasively. Another perfect fit for a cottage garden are Sedums (also known as stonecrop and orpines). This family of plants is extremely varied with species that will thrive from full sun to semi-shade. They are incredibly durable, well suited to poor soil conditions and come in a veritable rainbow of colours. Try S. spurium, a dwarf variety stonecrop best suited for billing in gaps in rock gardens and S. album and S. kamtschaticum for clumping or featured plants in your garden. Mix in with these a variety of hardy grown daylilies, irises, Martagon lilies and ornamental grasses. All of which are hardy, adaptable and beautiful. The Martagon lily is especially well suited to the cottage landscape due to its ability to thrive from southern locals to the Yukon and in nearly every soil type. Dont forget to carefully consider and plan your hardscape elements before installation, such as retaining walls, terraces, decks and steps. You will need to examine the drainage pattern on your property and take into consideration the effects of fall frost and spring thaw. Consider speaking to a professional landscaper for these hardscape elements, as you will want them to last for years to come. Try to naturalize your seating (patio) areas by using local flatstone or flagstone. Using a natural medium will both soften the appearance of your cottage and make it your seating area more inviting. Natural stone also makes the perfect stair material, as it wont rot, is perfectly suited to the landscape and will give your cottage a sense of permanence. The golden rule of cottage landscaping is to create an oasis of peace, beauty and relaxation. A cottage is a friend you can visit anytime… This saying conveys how we feel toward our cottages and our beliefs in their restorative powers. Our cottages are a place of hope, of exploring not only nature but also ourselves and for nurturing and deepening our relationships with our families. All of this occurs in our little parcel of rural landscape, or as many passionate cottagers refer to their cottage; their Garden of Eden. A Baby Shower Timeline-What You Need To Know Before The Big Event

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Rina Aris You’ve decided to take the plunge and host a baby shower for a good friend but you are not sure where to start. Let’s start the baby shower planning with a timeline. Six weeks to two months before the shower talk to the mom-to-be and see how she feels about you hosting a shower. Ask about the type of shower she would enjoy and discuss who she would like to invite. If you will be co-hosting the party you should also talk to these folks and make sure you are all on the same page. Get together with the co-hosts, discuss the plans and delegate. Determine your budget and select the date, time and location. Choose your theme and start looking for the supplies you will need. Make sure you have the invitations well in advance and get a list of the addresses of the those who will be invited. A month before the baby shower you should get the invitations ready to send and order a cake if you plan to serve one and will not be making it yourself. Plan a menu or interview caterers. If you decide to hire a caterer do so as soon as you make your decision. These people can get really busy and if you wait too long you may find yourself without a caterer. Two weeks before the baby shower you will want to start phoning those who have not responded to the R.S.V.P. You can begin purchasing non-perishable foods and also the last minute decorations. One week prior to the baby shower you should check on the status of the cake and confirm, discuss and finalize plans with the caterer. If you have reserved a party room for the baby shower you should check on those arrangements. You may still have a few R.S.V.P. calls to make. If you are making party favors, now is the time to finish them. Games should all be planned and any gifts purchased and wrapped. The day before the baby shower you can finish up any last minute cleaning, bake and prepare some of the food. You will want to check on your camera and make sure it is charged and that you have film and batteries if needed. The morning of the baby shower you should frost the cake or cupcakes if you made them yourself. Otherwise you should pick up the cake or any other food that you ordered. You can put the touch on the final decorations and make sure the serving table is ready and the chairs are set up. A few hours before the baby shower you can blow up any balloons you will be using. You can place a pad and pen by the chair of the person who will be recording the gifts. One hour before the baby shower begins you should make sure the bathroom is clean. You can get dressed and put on your make-up. Begin placing the food on the table if the caterers are not bringing it. Otherwise you can get ready to assist them. Fifteen minutes before the guests arrive you can light candles and add ice to the punch. This baby shower timeline will assist you in planning a stress free party. Rina Aris has hosted dozens of baby shower events. Planning one yourself has never been easier, even if you’re hosting one tommorow.
