Rose Pruning: A Required Skill

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Gordon Hall WHY AND HOW TO PRUNE YOUR ROSES. Rose pruning is a seasonal job that must be done for the health of your roses. You must prune your roses if you want them to thrive and be lovely. When you decide to prune, no matter what type of rose you are growing, you are making certain that you have healthy roses.Even if you don’t follow the exact directions, rose pruning will make your roses grow better. Rose pruning stimulates your roses growth and gives your roses exposure to light and air. If old roses are not pruned their nutrients will be blocked off, causing the roses to not grow and bloom as much as they could. Bugs and diseases find roses a great warm place to winter over in, pruning takes away most of your problems. By removing dead wood you are making more room for your healthier roses to grow. When you have roses that are thin stemmed and weak, rose pruning will make them stronger. If the smaller stems are not pruned they will in time seed and become dormant.Sadly your roses will become smaller. Early each spring rose gardeners take out their pruning shears and pull on their gardening gloves and prune their roses for the coming bloom. You need a good sharp pair of pruning shears and a good thick pair of gloves. If you live in a country that has a mild climate you can prune in late fall as soon as the plants go dormant. To determine if the wood is alive or dead, make a small cut on one of the stems, if the wood is alive it will be white. Cut out any branches that cross and rub, this will help prevent your rose plant from getting unnecessary diseases and give your plant a more appealing shape. Make all rose pruning cuts just above the buds, this is where new shoots will grow so don’t remove the buds. Choose buds that face outwards, this will let light into themiddle of the plant. Angle the shears so they are at a 45 degree angle and pointing to the middle of the bush, make the cut 1/4 inch above the bud, back 3 to 5 leaf branches downwards from top of bloom. This cut will be off the main branch. Cut the leaf set or stem that is facing the outward direction. This will be the high side of a cut, on the side the leaf set is on. The optimum leaf set removal for the first years trimming is a 3 bunch, but 5 are ok too. The goal is to remove as little as possible for the first years season. You want to remove or reduce parts of the plant that are not necessary, and which will increase air circulation and sun distribution, thus improving the health, beauty and bloom of the plant. Remove suckers and rootstock coming from the ground, put all pruning debri in yourrubbish bin, not in your compost heap. Consider sealing large cuts with white wood glue. DeadheadingIt is important to pick off all the dead flowers from your rose bushes 3 to 4 weeks before the end of the growing season, this encourages new flower growth next season.By carefully deadheading as part of your rose pruning routine you will have great looking roses. Using the deadhead method is typical for the new genetically engineered breed of roses. Older rose varieties at the end of their season form rose hips or seeds that need to be left on, as they need these to help them grow next season, so prune carefully. Wild roses are left alone most of the time for the look of the wilderness. In Summary, rose pruning allows a way for roses to become stronger and be more vital. By cutting down the old growth, you are allowing room for the roses to grow andbe more healthy. Gordi Hall just loves teaching others about gardening. Why Not Average Joe: Exploring Melana’s Choice

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Toni Coleman Admit it. You snickered, rolled your eyes and laughed out loud as the group of “Average Joes” filed out of their bus to meet Melana that first night. You probably thought “no way” as you settled in for a soap about a beautiful girl’s rejection of the geeks. Indeed, Melana herself stated, “Someone is messing with my head”, as the next “average” guy stepped down to meet her. However, in the episodes that followed, there was bonding, friendship and attraction between Melana and a number of the guys. It actually began to look as though she was falling for at least one or two of them. Then came the twist. The “gorgeous” guys were sent in to challenge the Joes and test Melana’s ability to see past the surface and choose based on what each man had to offer as a total package. At that point, what were you thinking? Who was your front-runner? Did you think it possible that the bonds that had been formed would be strong enough to hold Melana’s attention- and heart? I’m guessing that many people did. I know a lot of people were routing for Adam or Zack. So, what happened? In the days that followed the final episode, virtually all of the commentary centered on a very basic and “simple” explanation of Melana’s choice. They all said it was about “looks”. While I agree that physical attraction played a significant role, I believe Melana’s choice involved more than this. How we choose has to do with many things. These include: * physical attraction * shared interests * social compatibility and friendship * intellectual compatibility * ability to communicate * basic values * level of self-knowledge * level of maturity and dating experience * personal and family goals I am going to do a brief examination of how these played a role in Melana’s final decision. Follow along with me and think about how these factors come into play in your meeting and dating life. Perhaps Melana’s public struggle with these can provide some valuable insights into how you choose potential partners and assist you in your desire to make the best (and healthiest) choice for you. Let me begin by stating an obvious point that we are all aware of. The circumstances and setting of the meeting and dating that takes place on a “reality” show have little resemblance to the real world of dating. Dates are chosen, as is the person who will be doing the choosing. They are sequestered in a beautiful, romantic place where all their physical needs are attended to and everyone can present themselves in their best light. The real world of money, time, energy and the need for making dating plans are all handled by professionals who go “all out”. Even though the contestants spend weeks together, they are not confronted with the real life issues that singles in the dating world must deal with. Therefore, the circumstances are idyllic. This has pros and cons. I think we all have a pretty good idea of what these are. The major plus is that everyone can present himself or herself “equally”. The major drawback is that each relationship is limited to this fantasy existence, and there is no opportunity to see each other deal with the day-to-day challenges of real life. Stepping back into the episodes prior to the inclusion of the “hunks”, can you recall the great dates that Melana had with the guys? The group dates were full of laughs and bonding on a friendship level. We all enjoyed watching Dennis get to the top and see the support and caring that were shown towards him. With each week, Melana discussed and demonstrated the attractions she was forming with different guys on different levels. A few rose to the front of the line as she eliminated based on not just looks, but on the “connection” she felt with each. Indeed, she used this word a lot. This connection was formed by the elements of: * social compatibility and friendship * ability to relate * comfort level * basic attraction Just prior to the twist episode, Adam and Zack seemed to be the front-runners. In their individual dates, they were able to get to a deeper level of communication. Personality issues arose. There was discussion centering on likes, dislikes, attitudes and some of their own personal and family history. They began to get a sense of each others basic values and goals. Their ability to relate verbally and intellectually started to come into play. At this point, Adam seemed a strong front-runner. Do you remember what qualities Melana highlighted as she discussed her feelings about him? “He’s funny, down-to-earth, smart, liked by everyone, and just a great guy.” Do you remember their first “passionate” kiss, and how surprised Melana was at what a great kisser Adam is? We have to wonder why she was so surprised. Perhaps because he didn’t look like the type? But he clearly was. It appeared that Melana was forming a strong bond with him that included all of the elements that love requires- including physical attraction. So what happened? Enter the hunks. Do you remember Melana’s face as they were brought into the room? Pleased would be a good description. Her physical attraction to them was obvious and strong. She used words like “handsome, great body, too pretty”, to describe them. Still, she was drawn to Adam. As the show went on, Melana had individual dates. She decided to go out with the new guys to give them a chance. She eliminated Zack, to whom she had admitted having a strong physical attraction for, while being unsure about his other attributes. Towards the end, it was Adam vs Jason. Who would she choose and why? Clearly, the way Jason looked was a major factor in his staying on. However, Melana also talked about her comfort with him and the ease she felt in their ability to communicate. Melana also rated their physical intimacy as great. Indeed the scenes shown from their dates demonstrated a strong chemistry. Melana was very drawn to him. But what about Adam? Do you remember how Melana showed mixed feelings on her second to last date with Adam? She expressed that she felt conflicted. Adam was hurt and said so. Even so, they were able to go on with the date and have a pretty good time. On their last date, there seemed to be a real bond. Melana got a lot more information about Adam. He is successful, hard working, has many close friends and healthy family relationships. Clearly, she was impressed and drawn to all of these traits. But not enough…. So why her final choice? Melana found friendship, good communication, compatibility, mutual respect, comfort and attraction with Adam. She also found these with Jason. In addition, there was a STRONGER physical attraction. Remember her words, “look at him, who could resist that face”. The answer for her final decision? I can only speculate here. However I believe it had to do with her level of maturity and self-knowledge. Someone with greater self-awareness, a strong handle on their life goals and a level of maturity that teaches us that looks fade while other attributes become stronger over time; may very well have chosen Adam. Instead, Melana appeared to have succumbed to the immediate passions of the here and now, instead of looking ahead to who would be the best choice for husband, father and partner in the future and sometimes harrowing journey of commitment, marriage and family life. I read with interest that Melana and Jason’s “relationship” appeared to be over after their return from their final fantasy date. I was not at all surprised. One can only guess what went on. I think a good guess is that they got to know each other better without the pressure and competition that had come before.. Perhaps Melana began to see that along with his sweetness, Jason had a strong passivity towards life, whereas Adam strove for achievement through hard work and determination. Jason seemed to be in need of time and maturity before he would be able to move towards an intimate and committed relationship and the responsibilities and challenges that come with it. No one but Jason and Melana will ever know for sure. I just can’t help but wonder if she will regret her decision and wish she had been older and wiser when she was asked to make it. I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts and ideas regarding Melana and her choice of Jason. If you’d like to express them, please go to http://www.consum-mate.com to contact me. Oil Candle Supplies

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Peter Emerson Oil candles are one of the oldest types of candles in use. They are safer, cleaner, convenient and cheaper than wax candles. Oil candles also have a constant flame height unlike wax candles, with no dripping wax! However, they need a little bit of maintenance including the occasional wick adjustment and cleaning. And they burn continuously for a long time- even 24 hours. Since lamp oil can be purchased in larger quantities at cheaper price, these are also very cost effective. Oil candles make superb gifts. These days, there are many kinds of beautifully designed oil candles available along with lamp oil and specially designed wicks. They can also be custom designed as per specifications. Oil candles can be made of certain kinds of oils such as liquid paraffin oil. Candle oil can be purchased in bulk. It is generally priced at around $2.00 for an 8oz bottle. A set of four bottles can be obtained for $4.00 or less. There are also special lamp oils that have no odor and produce absolutely no soot. The wick is generally made of cotton and fiberglass. Oil candles can also be made at home. Just fill jar or a bottle with lamp oil. Put a wick in a glass tube so that just 1/8? of the wick is above top. You can also use an adaptor ring to adjust the wick. Place the wick in the bottle. Allow the wick to absorb the oil till the top and then light the candle. The bottle or the jar can also be decorated with flowers, herbs, colorful buttons and beads, marbles, seashells etc inserted into the bottle. Oil candles can also be filled with aromatic oils in appealing fragrances. These are special fragrances specially meant for candle making. Most of the oil candle supplies are easily available anywhere. There are special stores that sell these supplies. There are also many websites that provide information about oil candle supplies, which can also be purchased online. Making Artificial Flowers - A Very Easy And Simple Process

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Sarah H There are many types of artificial flowers including those made from glass, paper, porcelain and plastic, just to name a few, but the most popular artificial flowers are made from silk. All petals are made from white silk cotton and rayon fabric, regardless the finished colour. The fabric is die-cut into many petal shapes and sizes for one single type of flower. In the first process the petals are dyed using cotton balls and paint brushes to touch colour onto the petals beginning from the edge of the petal working towards the center. The dyeing of one petal can take up to an hour of concentrated work. The next step is to give the petal their distinctive look, with wrinkles, curves lines and other sorts of shapes needed to create a real and live look. The petals are then placed into molds where heat is then applied to press them into there unique and individual shapes. After these petals are pressed, some of them are stiffened with the use of very thin wire, which is covered with floral tape to hide the actual wires. The wires are inserted into the petals by hand and glue is pasted on to keep the wires in place. After this is done the petals are made into flowers by the use of glue or by running a wire through them to give them the desired shape. The separate flowers and spread of leaves are each assembled individually but several of them may be joined together to create one single stem. Another process of the work is to take wire precuts of specific lengths and properly cover the entire length of wire with floral paper or with waxed coated tape to make it self sticking. And finally the assembler has to take the individual flowers and the set of sprays of leaves to the stem to complete each flower. This is the last and final step in the artificial flower making process. All of the completed flowers are then taken to the packing department. Each flower stem is wrapped in floral paper and then the flowers are placed into boxes as if they are real flower bouquets that are to be delivered. These boxes are then sealed and stored for shipment. Artificial flowers are also made by individuals who like this sort of thing as a hobby. Their method is much simpler that the manufactured products and some of their finished products can be quite impressive. They acquire the necessary materials from their local craft shops, such as a clear fast drying glue, scissors, wire, wire cutters, floral tape, paint brushes and craft paints. They also have to purchase the materials with which the flower is going to be made, such as paper, stockings, or cloth; some even use dry flowers and berries to use in their creations. After collecting all the necessary materials, they then create a mold of the flower they would like to make with a stencil or some such tool, after which each petal has to be made individually and colored and then they are joined by a wire stem which is covered in floral tape. The petals are not as intricate as the manufactured products and instead of placing wire in the petals they just usually draw the outlines of them onto the petals before painting. sacred Love - Overcoming Loneliness

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Christopher Walker Sitting on top of the world, looking across the vast expanse of this earth and this universe, it is possible to feel the beauty and ultimate emptiness of our existence here on earth. Emptiness. It means without meaning, insignificant, without need or the hope of have a need met. Sitting on top of one of these mountains and looking beyond we know that we are a part of something far greater that the little worlds we call our own. The most immediate experience one can have amongst these great mountains is the feeling that we are alone. Yes, there are people, other trekkers, Sherpa villages, friends, but we are far from the phone, far from our normal disturbances. The silence of the moment spreads to the hour, to the afternoon and then the night. We know we are alone. Every breath is important and our bank account is not. We are responsible for everything, every thought is ours. There is no media, There is no telephone, few internet hidouts to connect us to the world we know. We are alone and for, possible once in our lives, unable to escape it. But we try. We befriend, we chatter, we bring our books and magazines to the mountains to distract us. Yet, time is our enemy. We have no escape, there are just so many books and distractions before the reality holds, we are alone. And lonely. The shock is a wonder. Our reactions bemusing. Regrets, truths, feelings we never understood, dreams we denied, hopes that had faded, wounds than needed healing, heal, we are in the mountains, sacred mountains and our lives will never be the same. How long can you sit and stare at the stars without talking, or thinking while in the city? Here the spirit of the mountains makes it easy. You sit and you sit and you sit and you just cant believe it. You are alive, for no real reason, with no real desire to change it. And in this emptiness, this loneliness you learn something about yourself that is a great and personal gift. You understand the word, spirit. Alone up here, it is lonely. But here, it is mean to be lonely. You are meant to feel isolated from your mind and its every striving desires, wants and needs. Here you get to know what lonliness could teach you back in the city life, but were unable to hear. You learn the meaning of silence, emptiness and therefore the deep awareness of inspiration and love. loneliness comes from the lack of self love. When we are in situations or circumstances that confront our self perception, we feel loveless, and then seek it. We seek love from others when we feel unworthy of love for ourselves. That is a strange situation. When we are at our worst, we seek the best. The more we hunger for love the more we lack self love. We can safely say that most mental health problems, sadness, loneliness evolves from the lack of self love and therefore most behavior we exhibit, which is not loving, is attention seeking. We seek attention because we lack worth. That attention seeking is a cruel friend. Because we may dress strangely, act strangely, be ill, seek help, be depressed and many other things but really what we are saying is I dont love who I am If we are saying this, I dont love who I am how can we be loved. Only when we love who we are can we say I feel you love and welcome it, I accept that it is valid But most of us dont know how to self love. We say I am worthy of love because I am clever, or because I am a great performer, or because I am ill and everyone give me attention for my misery There are many confusions around lost self love. Attachment to people and things exacerbates the lack of self love. We substitute a thing for a way of being. Things are not bad in themselves, but our use of them make them corrupt. I might wear Gucci sun glasses and say hey look at me I am cool and from the develop some worth for love. But what happens when I take them off. It is the same for women with those boots that come up to the knees and with high heels. They feel so sexy with their jeans tucked into those boots and this is nice. But what about tomorrow, after that sexiness wears right off and they wake up with a headache and wondering what made them make foolish choices. Loneliness is not an evil thing if we can dive into it and find a way of valuing it. For example we might be sitting at home and lonely and want to eat food, turn on the TV or even find a partner for sex. There are so many ways we can run away from loneliness, we can even email a friend and tell them about our unhappiness. But really there is no escape. Those things are just jumping from one problem to the next, and talking about our problems with friends makes those problems legitimate. Loneliness must be embraced as a time for self loving. It is a time to ask ourselves what are we doing that we hate. Like are we lying. Are we running away. Are we attached to an ex person who keeps us lingering in the past? There are so many questions about this and to avoid loneliness, is to avoid the journey of spirituality. Most of our loneliness is triggered by the desire to be exclusive. To own everything including our partner. We want exclusive control over all our possessions and therefore we create a withdrawal from life. WE build up this arsenal of things, objects people, family and guarantee we are not lonely by building this wall around ourselves. Walls are created to protect us, to prevent vulnerability. Instead they block the most critical thing we have, the ability to love. Now I am not advocating open door relationships. No, I am simply saying that love must ride up and over the fears we have. Then, we can acknowledge the beauty of life rather than remember it. Rather than remembering what was we can enjoy what is and what can be. Holding onto the past means wanting things to be like that. We glimpse a moment of beauty, then remember it, then regret that the current situation is not up to that one. Have you ever been with someone and shown them around your city for the first time.? They typically say oh that looks just like Mexico, or that looks like Boston or London or some other place. They are comparing everything to some memory. Then life has become a routine of repetition and safety. A pattern of life looking for routines and old ways, they wish things wouldnt change. A rainy day is bad, because they compare it to yesterday when the sun was out. But the rainy day can be just as wonderful and beneficial to them. It is the same with self love. We get attached to who we were, who we thought we could be, who we thing we are and who we want others to think we are. We compare ourselves to our ideals and even worse, to others. Then the whole of life become attentions seeking. We cant rest in the arms of our loved one without comparing how it was or could be. There is no innocence. There is a great opportunity to open ourselves to a completely different way. The key to that way is happiness. Happiness means an inner contentment with how things are. In understanding this we must differentiate between pleasure and happiness. Moments of happiness can be found in pleasure, but happiness cannot. That person who confuses pleasure and happiness will make many, many mistakes in their life. They cant even differentiate between real friendship and false, because even false friendship can result in pleasure,. One of the greatest pleasures people seek is attention. So a friend who gives the pleasure seeker attention, approval or holds them in high regard can easily become attractive to the pleasure seeker who thinks this will bring happiness. But attention just creates misery. You must know this if there is anything you can learn from understanding the natural way of life, that pleasure and happiness are completely in conflict with each other. Pleasure comes from the mind. There is no fixed definition of it. So what causes pain to one person might be pleasure to another. That is a very challenging reality. WE could go on forever about pleasures. It is a pleasure to blame people for your problems. It can be a pleasure to be always right. It is certainly a pleasure to think that you can be close to some ideal of a God. It is a pleasure to believe you are attractive. So anyone who validates those states of mind can give you pleasure. That is a really dangerous thing, because really what you want is happiness. Yes, you think that it is pleasure you are searching for but one day, you experience a silence, an inner happiness, you might just find yourself in true love and then those pleasures become confusing If you really experience contentment, then pleasures become very boring. Yes, there are moments when pleasures are high but the downs are equally low. Nobody wants the lows, they want the highs and this is the problem isnt it. So, when you look at a beautiful face are you experiencing happiness or pleasure? Or when the sun sets and you see that magnificent closure to a day, is that happiness or pleasure? The mind will call those things pleasure because it can compare them to displeasure. So the mind will say compared to yesterday, this sunset is amazing, and therefore I have pleasure That is why pleasure seekers are often depressed and feeling sorry for themselves, because every pleasure they get, they are reminded of a displeasure they had, they are always comparing today with something. Happiness on the other hand comes simply. It is like surrender. You give up and then that beautiful face or that amazing sunset just comes in. There is no thinking involved because there is no ambition. Ambition, striving, wanting they are the cornerstones of the pleasure seekers life. But the person who has happiness does not want the sunset to be good or the face to be beautiful. Beauty and goodness is already there, and the sunset or the face just reminds them of it. The spiritual path is happiness. The religious path is pleasure. On the spiritual side there is a lack of expectation, moreover there is a contentment with what is and a awareness of the guidance of greater forces. The mind, in spiritual practice is considered a wild horse with very little going for it, in terms of the quest for happiness. The mind is a pleasure seeking animal and in spiritual practice our aim is to tame this animal, teach it to focus on itself, or on objects of choice. The mind, in spiritual practice is slave, not the master. But the average person will see the mind differently. The mind wants to run away from loneliness, it wants to be reinforced and proven right. It wants to give care and control to those it loves and in seeing them benefit, derive pleasure. The mind is the parents choices around bringing their children up the best they can, the parent does what they do because the mind, with all its ups and downs calls this love. Happiness is different to pleasure. Pleasure is the avoidance of loneliness and therefore the wanting that comes from the mind. We want anything that takes us from the emptiness of being ourselves. So anything that achieves that aim, is attractive. Learning how to be lonely and happy.Loneliness can be a wonderfully happy experience as long as we are not resenting it. When I am lonely and dont want to be lonely, then I am in pain. I run for ways to escape it, alcohol, TV, my Ipod, any thing. I can even create unwellness which draws toward me those who love to love the needy. I have one friend like that. She is unable to enjoy my spirit and inspiration, yet, when I am ill she is the first one there. I wonder at much of our need for therapy, self help and advice from professionals, whether it is really attention seeking, just because we are lonely. Loneliness can drive people to depression and bulimia, to hyperactivity and performance. One lady I worked with was obsessed with getting men to seduce her, her escape from loneliness lasted no longer than the fleeting moments of approval before she would find a good reason to negate the person who approved of her. Then, she would return to me seeking help. Loneliness can be fun. When I am lonely I dive into it. I dont try to replace it. I might go to the art gallery and just feel the loneliness of the artist. I might write poetry or take my sea kayak out to a remote place and make a picnic. The whole idea of loneliness is that we dont like our own company so we create diversions. Because of those diversions we never get to experience our spirit. Our spirit, our self love, sits below the surface of everyday life. That is why people stay active, to avoid their spirit, they just dont like themselves enough. Loneliness does not mean being alone. Some days I wake with my lover and we both feel totally lonely. We dont need to be alone on this day, just respectful that there is something very sacred going on. That may mean less talk, less enthusiasm for a particular commitment. Its ok to be quiet, not out all the time. There are four ways to escape loneliness. They are called the four substitutes, They are sex, food, greed and religion. Each is an attachment to something outside ourselves in order to fill the emptiness. But how can we be filled when we are empty? Those substitutes are like Band-Aids over a cut. You will see loneliness in churches, meditation halls, yoga classes. People running away from where they are in order to become something new. That is the sign of emptiness, the running toward and the running from. Loneliness is the key to love To really love, you must be lonely. That is it. Many people come to love to avoid loneliness but loneliness is never avoided. So then they are in an abusive relationship because they want company, they want predictability. They want, want, want and really they are afraid of being lonely. Loneliness is not a tough place if you are alone with someone you like. To like that person you are alone with you must do things alone that are worthily of liking. This is the problem isnt it. We are often two people and when we are alone we are that other person that we would not like others to see. Then in love and relationship someone does see. They see the self we dont like because we were alone with that part and we didnt even like it. We were so lonely and it was so bad that we went and found someone to cure the loneliness. But they make it worse because now two people dont like who we are when we are alone. What to do then? Loneliness is depression. It is also the victory of the monk who lives in isolation for 3 years 3 months 3 days and 3 hours. They live alone in order to get past the dislike of the loneliness. Then it becomes a friend, not a problem. Much attention seeking is loneliness because that person doesnt like who they are alone. So they become obsessed with approval of friends and lovers, because that masks the loneliness. But that person who cannot be lonely, sit in the discomfort of it, cannot love. They can mimic love, repeat books or react but that person who cannot be fully miserably lonely and sit in that experience must become self obsessed. Then they seek others to do the same. They are not in the circuit of the average person seeking to be liked so that there is a security, from which they know about life, and from this they think there is love. The seeker of God is lonely and cannot love. The seeker of enlightenment is lonely and cannot love. Loneliness is the path to both God and enlightenment. It is an emptiness, not a doing. As soon as we do the thing, in other words seek love, seek God, seek enlightenment, we are in mind, wanting and wanting always blocks love. There are ways to be comfortable being lonely. Turn off the TV, throw away the chocolate, reduce food intake, give more than get, moderate alcohol, become happy with life as it is, help others reduce suffering. This is the path to living with emptiness and loneliness and enjoying it. In fact, loving it. http://www.chriswalker.com.au Chris Walker is a world leading change agent, an environmentalist and author of more than 20 books. Tips On Dating When Online Is Not For You

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Maureen Staiano There are a lot of sites and articles relating to online dating. The pros and cons, the great love matches and the dating horror stories. I know quite a few people who have pursued this avenue when looking for Mr. or Ms. Right. How about some tips on dating if online does not work for you? Some of the people I talked to have had average success and are still pursuing the perfect partner online give or take a few flaws. Others I know have tried it and felt it was not quite for them and moved onto other avenues of meeting someone. Many of my friends found that despite all the tips on dating available online, the people they eventually met had not been totally honest in their representations. Meeting someone that you want to form a relationship with can be difficult. People move around quite often for work and getting connected in a new area can seem quite daunting. When you are heading toward middle age and maybe find yourself single after a divorce you can feel confused as to where to start. It can seem like a whole new world out there in todays dating scene. After a certain age the bar scene does not quite cut it and if you are not a drinker it certainly isnt a great choice. Its tough to try and get to know someone in a noisy crowded atmosphere. Perhaps your old group of friends has scattered or worse yet, you are currently the only single person in your crowd. You are looking for a special someone but feel that the online dating services are just not for you, where do you go? The following are some of the successful tips on dating I have received from friends who have faced the same situation and were successful at meeting new friends and possible romantic partners. 1. Get involved in something in your community. Volunteer. Volunteering brings many people together for a unified purpose. It could be a community project or sometimes there are places such as the humane society (if you are an animal lover). If you happen to be a parent, the school is always looking for volunteers. Just check your local paper. It is a great resource for finding whats going on in your town and where they could use some help. 2. Join a club. Again the local paper will list different clubs, some designed expressly for singles. Find something that interests you and jump right in. If you change your mind later and feel it isnt right for you, move on to something else. At least this way you are in the process. 3. There are often some adult recreational sports that are fun and you get your exercise as well. This particular one worked for me. I had joined an adult recreational volleyball league after my divorce and met the man who eventually became my second husband. 4. I have a few friends who have taken evening classes at the local college or through adult education and met people they were interested in. Its always easier to strike up a conversation when you know that you and the other person already share a common interest. 5. Dont be afraid of having your friends set you up on a blind date. Hopefully they at least know a little about your likes and dislikes and will keep that in mind as they make a recommendation. Either way try to keep an open mind and just treat as good practice for the next person that comes into your life. These are just a few tips on dating to consider if you find yourself a little ill at ease with online dating. Without a doubt, dating online has worked for many people but it may not be the best answer for everyone. Questions and Answers About Wedding Favors

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Yolanda Nash Q: Are there any types of creative wedding favors that I can make myself? A: With a little bit of ingenuity and a few helping hands, making your own wedding favors are an excellent way to add a personalized touch to your wedding day. If your guest list is on the large side, you may want to enlist the help of friends and family as well as the bridal party to make things a little easier. Visit your local craft stores or explore the internet for a host of ideas and then think of this time as a chance to unwind in good company while creating your beautiful and unique favors. A few simple ideas for inexpensive, do-it-yourself favors are cookies in a jar tied with a like-colored ribbons, or mason jars filled with homemade preserves along with personalized labels that are easy enough to make at home using a computer and a color printer. Q: Are there any small but unique items that I can give to my guests as wedding favors? A: Youre only limited by your own imagination, especially if youre having a theme wedding, when it comes to ideas for favors. For summer nuptials try handing out sunglasses, sparklers, or small bottles of sunscreen wrapped in pretty fabrics that match your gowns. Spring weddings are ideal for giving out packets of flower seeds, bulbs, seedlings or tree saplings. Or perhaps you and your fianc met at work, you could then hand out appropriately colored post-it notes, highlighters, pencils, pens and other office-type supplies. Other small items that can be specifically tailored to your own wedding are pretty, miniature bars of soaps, trinkets and knickknacks, wine, gourmet jelly beans or other foods such as cakes or pastries. Shot glasses, yo-yos or other small games along with lottery tickets are also creative ideas for fun wedding favors. Brainstorm with the bridesmaids to come up with something that is viable but that’s also uniquely all your own. Q: What type of favors are best for personalizing? A: While the date of the nuptials should always be included, most couples prefer to have their full names as opposed to just their initials or monograms printed on their favors. For this reason its important to choose an item that will allow room for all of the necessary characters without appearing crowded. The artistically inclined can also produce a truly one-of-a-kind favor by creating a logo using favorite colors and perhaps a combination of the bride and grooms astrological signs or initials. Mugs, wine glasses, picture frames and pens are just a few items that are commonly personalized for wedding favors. Q: Is it acceptable to forgo the tradition of favors completely? A: While it is a lovely and appreciated gesture on your part, it is not absolutely necessary to provide wedding favors for your guests. If you choose to eliminate favors from your reception, consider showing your appreciation in other ways such as making a donation to your favorite charity in the name of each of your guests instead. A small but beautifully decorated note card at each place setting is a great way to inform guests of your special gift to them. Or, for a different but amusing twist, you could set up small games on the tables for people to keep as mementos of the day such as dominoes, checkers, chess, and cards. This encourages guests to socialize and have fun, especially while waiting for your grand entrance. Yolanda is the owner of Yolandas Wedding Favors. She sells many different types of wedding favors such as, love glass coasters, two peas in a pod salt and pepper shakers and many many more. Yolandas Wedding Favors also carries many different bridesmaid gifts such as tote bags, robes, slippers and much more.
